A Timeless Quilt Made Simple

Simple doesn’t have to be boring, and I have the perfect project for you. Its straightforward layout highlights the texture and pattern of each fabric, creating a quilt that is timeless, versatile, and easy to love.

At 50″ x 60″, this size works beautifully as a lap quilt or small throw. It’s approachable for beginners, quick to piece, and a great way to gain confidence with straight seams and layout without trimming, specialty rulers, or complicated techniques.

But one of the best things about a square quilt like this is how easily it scales, and I’ve put together size and fabric requirements to make it even easier for you to start your own. If you’d like the quilt exactly as shown in the lap-size sample, that pattern is available here.

Size Configurations (Quilt Center Only)

This pattern is built using a simple grid of squares. Sizes below are calculated using a 4 1/2″ finished square and include seam allowance.

Borders are optional and can be added to any size to reach your preferred finished dimensions.

Square size: 5″
Standard charm pack: 42 squares

Lap Quilt (Sample Size)

  • 8 squares across × 10 squares down
  • Finished center size: 36″ × 45″

  • 2 charm packs

*This size is perfect for lap quilts, gifting, or a first quilting project.

Large Throw

Quilt center

  • 12 squares across × 14 squares down
  • Finished center size: 54″ × 63″

Charm packs needed

  • 168 squares total
  • 4 charm packs

*A generously sized throw that works well on couches, chairs, or layered decor.

Twin Size

Quilt center

  • 14 squares across × 18 squares down
  • Finished center size: 63″ × 81″

Charm packs needed

  • 252 squares total
  • 6 charm packs

*Ideal for a twin bed, with borders added to suit your style and fit.

A Note About Borders

Borders are intentionally left flexible in this pattern. You can add narrow or wide borders, or skip them altogether, to customize the final size without changing the quilt construction.

This approach keeps the pattern beginner-friendly while allowing more experienced quilters to make it their own.

Why This Works

Because the quilt is built entirely from repeatable squares, resizing is simple. The steps stay the same no matter the size—just add more rows and columns.

That’s what makes this pattern both timeless and approachable, whether you’re quilting for the first time or adding a relaxed project to your rotation.

So, go grab yourself some charm packs and start this cozy quilt to kick off 2026!

Happy New Year and happy quilting,

Marian
